WHY JOIN OUR CLUB?
We have a proud history of being the UK’s inaugural University Rugby League team. We established the University game that we play today. We have 2 teams both that play at a competitive level. The first team play within the hardest university division, the Northern premier. Which offers a high standard of rugby league and the chance to battle against many semi-professional players. The second team, on the other hand, play in the Northern 2B. Whilst still being competitive, it allows for players to gain experience and potentially be selected to the first team.
We are also pleased to announce that within the upcoming 2018/19 season, the club will have access to Castleford Tigers’ (professional rugby league side) training facilities. This will be used alongside the top-class facilities at the University of Leeds’ Edge sports centre and Weetwood sports park. Where we have access to specialist strength and conditioning coaches, gyms, swimming pool, and the many different pitches.
For most people, the best and most memorable time at University are their nights out. Every Wednesday, without fail, we have a social. Each week has a different theme and each week gets better than the last, so you’ll never be bored. After a few socials you will come to love wearing ridiculous outfits as you descend onto Mischief at the warehouse with your team mates. It is that good that we have many social members who come out every Wednesday despite not playing for the club in games. We have a famous night when we get the train into the city centre and go around the ‘old men’s pubs’ with funny rules before the routine trip to Mischief. The social side allows the team to grow closer and make memories for life.
After the tragic passing of our friend and team mate, James Burke, the club came together to raise close to £5,000 for a foundation in his name. The foundation aimed to raise awareness for mental health issues. The money was raised through events organised by the club. This included a boxing night against Leeds University American Football society, an auction night where the team were put up to be bid on for date, and 12 of the team participating in the Leeds half marathon. We also designed and created a cocktail, inspired by James’ Jamaican heritage, that was sold in the University bars with the proceedings going to the foundation. The link with the foundation has allowed us to remember James’ life. It has also meant that our members, who didn’t necessarily know James, have learnt the impact he has had on our club.
The club has been recognised for our commitment to charity work and for the ‘itsoknottobeok’ collaboration with Leeds University American Football, winning 3 awards. The campaign aimed to raise awareness and money for The James Burke foundation and therefore raise awareness of mental health issues.
We aim to continue our strong link with foundation, whilst also taking part in a number of other community projects as well.
Rugby Not Your Thing?
Don’t worry, playing rugby is only one aspect of the club, we welcome everyone with open arms, as there are many activities you can still get involved with. Whether it be just attending socials on a Wednesday or helping with our various charity projects or even coaching the team. The university offers coaching scholarships that allow people to be a part of the club through coaching or community work. This is an excellent opportunity for students to further develop themselves outside the academic arena.
