2018 Leeds Uni 1st XIII v Nottingham Uni 1st XIII

14th November 2018

The 1s got their second victory of the season yesterday with a 21-20 victory over the every improving Nottingham 1s. Nottingham were leading 10-8 at half time, despite Leeds scoring twice through Conor Rundle and Jude Corcos. The second half started brilliantly and Rundle scored his second after running 60m to score under the posts after good work from Aussie Pat Brandon who was quick out of dummy half. Corcos then scored his routine second before Nottingham scored twice to put the scores level at 20-20. With 5 mins left, Joel Bateson slotted a drop goal from 30 meters to seal the victory.

Top of the table? Away from home? Not a problem.

Leeds 2s secured their second win in as many games away at Sheffield as they beat the team who had won 4 games from 4 by 18 points to 12. Leeds made a bright start (for a change), completing their sets efficiently and effectively, but this didn’t stop Sheffield scoring first from a kick into the in-goal that bounced that was collected by and touched down.

It didn’t take long for Leeds to reply- in fact, it didn’t take long for Leeds to reply 3 times in a row. Ben Saych scored on the wing soon after Sheffield had scored and debutant Ryan Gerrard converted to put Leeds 6-4 ahead. Then, Guy McDonald, making his competitive debut for LURL, scored on the left hand side. Soon after, captain Freddie Found stripped the ball from a Sheffield man 40m out, ran 20m before getting tackled, played the ball quickly for Myurun Waran to collect it and score under the posts. Unfortunately, Sheffield scored just before half-time to make it 18-8 at the break.

The second half wasn’t so much a game of rugby, more a defensive exercise for Leeds as they stayed camped in their own half defending Sheffield sets for virtually the whole 40 minutes. Despite this, they only conceded once- Sheffield failed to concede the try again, meaning the match ended 18-12- the 6 point difference being down to Gerrard’s excellent kicking.

2018 Leeds Uni 1st XIII V Leeds Beckett 1st XIII Match report

7th November 2018

1s put in a solid performance vs Leeds Beckett 1s despite being on the wrong end of a 36-6 score line. Which was converted by Joel Bateson. The match was much tighter than the score suggests and strong performances from try scorer Harrison Gallagher and Jonathon Burnett were very pleasing to coach Tim Rumford, especially given they are freshers. Dick of the day went to Ben Stevens who kick the ball so far out on the full that I think it has just been recovered in Headingley Stadium!

Hull 2nd XIII vs Leeds 2nd XIII match report

By Freddie Found

If there is a better way to start a season than a convincing away win, I haven’t heard of it.

Leeds 2s beat Hull 2s 34-18 on an autumnal Wednesday afternoon in East Yorkshire to start their 2018/19 BUCS Northern 2B campaign in the best possible manner. The game itself started poorly for Leeds, as Hull scored on their first attack in the 2nd minute. They converted the try to make it 6-0.

Then, in a quite astonishing turn of events, Leeds proceeded to score 3 tries in quick succession- George Done getting the first after the ball was worked from right to left, leaving the Hull defence wandering. Straight after Hull kicked off again, Chris Burton made a fantastic break and passed it to Callum Ralph to score on his debut. It soon got even better for Leeds, as a grubber kick (perhaps the best kick he made in the first half…) from Kieran Hope was chased expertly and grounded by Olly Dobson. Hull scored and converted just before half-time to make it 12-12 going into the break.

Leeds picked up where they had left off in the second half, Harrison Gallagher scoring off a carry from a penalty tap, showcasing his abilities as a strong runner (the new Sam Greaves, perhaps?). Gallagher did get a second try later on in the match, but not after one of the stars from 2017/18, James Lavarello, scored after backing himself on the wing, cutting inside to leave the Hull defence looking foolish. Hull did get one try back after sustained attack, during which Leeds demonstrated their impressive defensive abilities, but it proved futile as Olly Dobson got his second with a blistering break. 34-18 the final score, “very promising” the final verdict.

2018 Leeds Uni 1st XIII V Newcastle Uni 1st XIII

17th October 2018

Having been bitterly disappointed after last week’s performance, the 1s bounced back to beat Newcastle 36-18 in a tight match at Weetwood.

The 1s started well but were unable to capitalise. However, the home side were eventually 12-0 up at the half thanks to tries from 2018 Jude Corcos and Reece Brunt, respectively.

With main prop, Sam Greaves, off the field with a badly broken nose, you could have expected the performance to drop off but it intensified with four more tries from Ben Stevens, Harry Aaronson and Corcos and Brunt again. Aaronson converting 5 of 6. Newcastle scored three late tries, which will disappoint coach Rumford but the game was already won and 1s came out victorious.

Next week is another big challenge vs Hull and the boys are looking forward to it already.

10th October 2018

On an uncomfortably hot day in the midlands, our 1s went down 28-24 to a spirited Nottingham side. They got off to a good start with Brad Taylor finding space on the left edge after good work by Ben Stevens. Harry Aaronson converted. Nottingham then scored for tries in four sets which put them 24-6 ahead at half time.

The second half began in a similar fashion to the first with uni scoring twice through Aaronson taking the score to 24-18. Uni thought they had completed the comeback when Joel Bateson scored over from hooker to level the scores but a controversial try in the last five minutes from Nottingham sent them home 28-24 winners.

MOM went to Sam Greaves for an excellent stint in the pack. Onto next week vs a very good Newcastle side.

LUURL 1st XIII V Leeds Beckett 1st XIII match report

By Harry Aaronson

Even though there were plenty of positives to take from the game, the first team were on the wrong end of a 44-16 defeat vs Beckett at Varsity 2018 on Wednesday. With both teams down to 12 men for the majority of the match, the Beckett forwards laid a platform for their backs to blitz uni in the second half.

Tries were scored by Ben Stevens, Conor Rundle and man of the match Jude Corcos on his debut for the club. Next week for the ones is a massive game away vs Nottingham and Tim will be hoping to come away with the two points in the team’s first league encounter.

Leeds Beckett 2s vs LURL 2s match report

By Freddie Found

A phrase often used when talking about sports matches since gone is “the scoreline doesn’t tell the whole story”. There will have been few other matches that this applies to more than LURL 2s away at Leeds Beckett 2s in Leeds Varsity 2018.

With a final score of (50-something)-0 to Beckett, one would think any interpretation of the LURL performance would be negative. This, however, should not be the case. There were many positives to be taken out of the performance- impressive displays put on by certain freshers, a resilience that remained high despite conceding several tries in a short period of time in the second half and, perhaps most importantly, high attendance figures from the players. With 30 players in the matchday squad and a new specialist team coach in Neil Barnaby, it looks like the 2s could be force to be reckoned with in Northern 2B this season.

Final word goes to unfortunate Josh Clough, who, having come on for a short run out at the end of the match, broke his lower leg in 2 places in the last tackle of the match. All at LURL wish him a speedy recovery.
